How to Add Sounds to Your Discord Soundboard (and Play Them in Voice Chat)
Upload custom sounds to your Discord server's soundboard, get past the 5-second and 512 KB limits, and route audio into your mic so your friends actually hear it.
Discord's soundboard is genuinely good, and almost nobody has customised it. Below: how to upload your own sounds, what the file limits really are, and the separate trick for playing audio into voice chat that isn't in the soundboard at all.
Uploading a sound to your server's soundboard
You need Manage Expressions permission on the server (server owners have it by default).
- Download the sound you want as an MP3. Every pad on this site has a ⬇ button.
- In Discord, open Server Settings → Soundboard.
- Click Upload Sound.
- Pick the file, give it a short name, optionally attach an emoji.
- Save. It's now available to everyone in that server's voice channels.
To play it: join a voice channel, click the soundboard icon in the voice panel (the smiley with sound waves), and click your sound. Everyone in the channel hears it.
The file limits, and how to actually meet them
Discord rejects most sounds people try to upload, for two reasons:
- Maximum 5 seconds. Longer files are refused outright.
- Maximum 512 KB. A 5-second 320 kbps MP3 is about 200 KB, so this is rarely the binding constraint — unless you're uploading a WAV, which will be.
- MP3 or OGG. WAV, M4A and FLAC are not accepted.
If your file is too long or too big, re-export it: trim to under 5 seconds and encode as MP3 at 128 kbps. In CapCut, Audacity or any editor, that takes about thirty seconds.
The sounds on this site are already cut short and encoded as MP3, which is exactly what Discord wants — most of them upload without touching anything.

How many sounds can a server have?
Slots scale with the server's boost level:
- No boosts: 8 sounds
- Level 1: 24 sounds
- Level 2: 36 sounds
- Level 3: 48 sounds
Nitro doesn't add server slots — it lets you use your personal sounds across any server that allows it. If you're out of room, delete the ones nobody triggers rather than buying boosts.
Playing a sound that isn't in the soundboard
The soundboard only plays files you uploaded. To pipe anything — a long clip, a track, this site's pads played live — into a voice channel, you route your browser's audio into your microphone input:
- Install a virtual audio device: VB-Cable (Windows), BlackHole (macOS), or VoiceMeeter if you want a full mixer.
- Set your system or browser output to that virtual device.
- In Discord, go to Settings → Voice & Video and set Input Device to the same virtual device.
- Turn off Echo Cancellation, Noise Suppression and Automatic Gain Control — they are designed to destroy exactly this kind of audio.
One catch: with input switched to the virtual cable, your actual microphone is no longer being sent. VoiceMeeter solves this properly by mixing mic and audio into one virtual output; the simple VB-Cable route means choosing between talking and playing sounds.
Sound choice matters more than you think
A soundboard is only fun for as long as it's a surprise. Some rules learned the hard way:
- Keep everything under two seconds. Vine Boom works because it's over before anyone can get annoyed.
- Have one disappointment sound. Bruh Sound Effect #2 is the canonical choice.
- Alert stings like Metal Gear Solid Alert are the funniest ones, because they imply somebody has been caught.
- Never upload something loud and screechy. It's funny once and then it's a mute.
FAQ
What are Discord's soundboard file limits?
Under 5 seconds, under 512 KB, and MP3 or OGG format. Longer or larger files are rejected on upload. Re-encoding at 128 kbps MP3 keeps a 5-second clip well under the size cap.
Do I need Nitro to use the Discord soundboard?
No. Every server has a soundboard with 8 slots by default. Nitro lets you carry your own personal sounds into other servers, and server boosts increase how many custom sounds a server can store — but the basic soundboard is free.
How do I add sounds to Discord on mobile?
You can play soundboard sounds from the mobile app, but uploading new ones requires the desktop or web client under Server Settings → Soundboard.
Why can't my friends hear the sound I'm playing from my browser?
Browser audio goes to your speakers, not into the voice channel. Either upload the sound to the server's soundboard, or route your audio through a virtual audio cable such as VB-Cable or BlackHole and select it as your Discord input device.
Why is my soundboard icon greyed out?
Either the server has no sounds uploaded yet, or your role lacks the Use Soundboard permission. A server admin can grant it under Server Settings → Roles.
Can I get banned for using a soundboard?
Not for using it — but servers set their own rules, and spamming sounds in voice chat is the fastest way to get muted or kicked by a moderator. Discord itself only intervenes over genuinely abusive audio.
